Reproducing that impression is a system problem: a display stack fast enough to animate at 60 fps, a gimbal with the torque to move quickly and the stillness to hold, and an expression engine that knows when to glance. Whether it sits on a desk or in a cabin changes the audio and the mounting — not the engineering discipline.

What makes a screen face feel present
Latency, measured in milliseconds
Wake word, ASR, LLM first token and the expression that acknowledges it — a face that reacts 800 ms late reads as broken even when the answer is right.
A gimbal that holds still
Encoder resolution, backlash and control loop decide whether the head sits calmly or hunts by half a degree forever. Cheap gimbals are recognisable from across a room.
The glance, not the stare
Continuous eye contact is unsettling. Small glances, blinks at irregular intervals and a slight head lead before speech are what make a face feel social.
Audio for the room it lives in
A desk has a reflecting wall behind it; a cabin has road noise and glass. Same microphone array, different tuning — and it cannot be fixed later in software alone.

Questions buyers ask
Are you affiliated with NIO or NOMI?
No. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or a supplier to NIO or NOMI. We develop screen-face robots for other brands. We do not reproduce the NOMI design, its proportions, its animation set or its trade dress, and our customers are told in writing that a lookalike is not something we will build.
Can you make it for a car dashboard?
Yes, as an aftermarket accessory: mounting, power from the 12 V socket or a hardwire kit, thermal design for a cabin that reaches 70 °C, and audio tuned for road noise. Carmaker factory fitment is a different programme with different qualification; tell us which one you mean.
What display do you use for the face?
Typically a round AMOLED in the 1.7–2.4 inch range with a cover glass and an anti-glare treatment, driven directly rather than through a general-purpose OS compositor — that is how the expression stays in the sub-100 ms range.
Can the same product work on a desk and in a car?
The mechanism and expression engine yes, the rest no: mounting, power, thermal and audio tuning all diverge. Trying to serve both with one SKU is how products end up mediocre in both places. We would build two variants on one platform.
